The Under-Stair Closet Held the Night

The hall felt easier. You walked past the white door under the stairs, heard the latch still closed, and left it that way so the living room would not smell like a beach bag. That was the right instinct and the wrong ending. The triangular volume still held the night. Hurricane season runs through November 30. A milder October morning is not a dry closet.

An under-stair closet is a small room with a bad shape. The ceiling drops with the stringer. The back wall is short. Supply air, if the house has any at all in that hall, stops at the door. People hang a raincoat, stack a beach towel, and shut the door. The coil wrings the air it sees. The shut triangle keeps what the towels left on the shelves.

Why the triangle outranks the calendar

Cool is not dry. We already walked the whole-house version: why 68 still felt clammy. This note is the closet under the stairs on the eighth of October, not a second write-up of that July trick. The landing above the door is a different volume: the stair landing held the milder night. Shoes at the entry are the foyer job: the foyer held the wet shoes. Jackets on hooks you can see are the mudroom: the mudroom held wet jackets. Towels in a tall linen stack are already covered: the linen closet held the wet towels. The triangle stores the load behind a door you are tempted to crack so the hall can “air it out.”

Outdoor relative humidity (RH) after an overnight coastal band often stays in the 80s even when the morning feels easier than August. Living-space target on this site is about 45–55% relative humidity (RH). Sustained above 60% is the action cue. Open the door into the hall because the sleeve felt right and you import the box you just left closed. A painted panel is a cover, not a dryer.

Guide: Florida humidity home guide. How to read the meter: hygrometer placement. Coastal envelope: coastal houses. Closet sizing, not this triangle specifically: damp closet guide. This is the space under the stringer, not the Florida room after afternoon rain: the Florida room held the afternoon rain.

Morning check

Put the meter on a shelf inside the closet, not on the hall table, and not in a hand you just washed. Wait for the number to settle. Log closet relative humidity (RH), hall relative humidity (RH), and the thermostat setpoint. Do it before coffee, before you grab a jacket, and before you prop the door with a shoe.

A useful morning looks like this. Hall near the living-space band. Closet several points higher, sometimes well above 60%, with a damp smell on the lowest shelf even when the tile in the hall looks dry. The light you flipped on does not wring that box. It warms the paint. The towels still hold what they brought in.

If the closet floor is wet in a line, not a film from the night, stop treating it as room air. That is a fitting or a hose job, and it belongs with the supply notes, not this one: the closet supply line sweated into the pan. A film on the shelf with dry walls is still the triangle holding vapor.

Write the gap. Closet minus hall. A gap that returns every milder morning is the pattern. One reading after you stuffed in a wet towel is a rumor.

Do not

  • Do not prop the door into the hall because the morning felt like fall. Outdoor relative humidity (RH) in the 80s, plus a box that held damp towels all night, is wetter than the room you have been wringing. You import both.
  • Do not drop the whole house to chase one closet. A cold slider in the living room is not dry closet air. We already covered that trap in July, and again at the glass: the sofa note is the fabric, not the triangle under the stairs.
  • Do not park a box fan in the opening and call it a dry-out. A fan moves the closet into the rug and the stair runner.
  • Do not leave a beach towel folded wet until the weekend. Wet cloth in a shut volume is how a mild morning becomes a smell. The linen note already taught the towel lesson. This one is the short ceiling and the missing supply.
  • Do not size a machine for the closet alone and ignore the rooms that feed the house. Size the zone you actually condition. AC versus a dehumidifier. How to measure the house. Runtime still matters: right-size the AC, then wring humidity.

Run this

  1. Log closet relative humidity (RH) against the hall for 24 hours at the setpoint you actually live with. A common Florida comfort band is 74–76°F. Do not “test fall” by jumping the setpoint first.
  2. If the shelf holds well above 60% while the hall looks fine, leave the door shut until the closet is the drier volume, hang wet towels on a rack the house air can see, and keep shoes that came in from the walk off the lowest shelf. The conditioned rooms still follow the size guide. After a rain pulse: after-storm sizing.
  3. If you run a machine for that living space, put it where it can empty without a bucket you forget under the stairs. Hose downhill if you have the fall. A bucket in the triangle is how you find a ring on the floor in October.

A logger on the shelf beats a glance at the thermostat. The SensorPush HT.w is USA-built, small enough to sit on the short shelf, and it keeps the night you were not there to read.

If landfall week is still on the calendar, stage before the cone: hurricane season moisture. If the assembly is already wet: post-storm dry-out.

October is not the dry season. The first milder morning still leaves vapor in the shut triangle. Measure the shelf. Leave the door shut until the numbers say otherwise. Drain whatever you run, continuously.
