The Florida Room Held Afternoon Rain

The hallway said 75°F. The sofa felt fine. You left the slider to the Florida room cracked after the afternoon band and sat on the rattan like the house had already wrung the air.

That is a Florida September pattern. Peak hurricane season still means afternoon rain and outdoor air in the 80s. The living-room coil wrings return air. A screened Florida room with a thin roof and three walls of mesh does not. Relative humidity (RH) at the seating can sit ten points above the hallway while you congratulate the setpoint.

Treat the Florida room as a room. Not as leftover lanai you pretend is conditioned.

Why a screened room holds the shower

A Florida room is a box with holes on purpose. Screen keeps bugs out. It does not keep vapor out. Outdoor relative humidity (RH) after a peninsula shower often stays in the 80s. Leave the slider cracked and that load walks into the sofa zone. Shut the slider and the rattan still sits in yesterday’s rain.

Living-space target on this site is about 45–55% relative humidity (RH). Sustained above 60% is the action cue. The Florida room will often be the first zone to cross it after an afternoon band, even when the hallway is honest.

Guide: Florida humidity home guide. Coastal envelope: coastal Florida humidity. How to walk the house: measure sq ft and AC size. Condo glass if this porch shares a stack wall: condo dehumidifier.

We already covered leftover vapor after the radar clears: relative humidity (RH) after overnight rain. That note is the house after the shower. This note is the screened room people treat as living space. A wet cushion is not a puddle, and it is not the hallway.

The slider note was beads on glass: the slider wept after the morning band. Here the “glass” is mesh. Same physics. Different hole.

Quiet radar does not dry a screened porch.

Morning check (ten minutes)

You do not need a lab. You need two numbers and a look at the slider.

  1. Interior wall in the hallway. Not on the supply. Not on the Florida-room screen.
  2. Same house, table or interior wall of the Florida room — not taped to the mesh, not on a wet cushion.

Read relative humidity (RH) in both after the band, then again twenty minutes later with the slider the way you actually live with it. If the Florida room sits 8–10 points above the hallway and over 60%, the house is not “fine.” The sofa zone is. Log both for 24 hours. A one-look display while the screens are still dripping is a lie.

Feel the cushion and the paper on the table. If the paper feels cool and limp after the shower, you stored vapor in a box with three screened walls. Shut the slider after rain. Do not “air the house” through the mesh.

If the drywall at the header or the first interior jamb looks stained, pin it at 12 and 24 inches and compare to a known-dry interior closet. Looking dry is not a reading. Moisture meter after a leak.

Tempo Disc Maxi is the USA-made logger we list for a hallway vs Florida-room pair you can read later. FloridaDamp is an Amazon associate — we earn from qualifying purchases. I still point at this one because it keeps a trail after you walk off the rattan, not because anyone paid for a review.

Hand standing water to plumbing

If you see water at a closet, a heater, or a supply on the house side of the slider, that is not a relative humidity (RH) problem first. That is water on a floor. Carlo already walked placement: five places a leak puck earns rent. Fix or call out the leak. Then measure the air. A wet track does not make a porch dehumidifier the first tool.

If the Florida room itself is dripping from a roof seam or a hose bib, that is a wet assembly. Board and call a licensed plumber or roofer if the valve will not shut. Then pin.

What not to do in the Florida room

  • Do not leave the slider cracked “for a breeze” after afternoon rain. Outdoor relative humidity (RH) after a Florida shower often stays in the 80s. You import the load you are trying to dump.
  • Do not run a box fan at the mesh and call it a dry-out. A fan moves wet air into the hallway.
  • Do not drop the whole-house thermostat to 68°F to rescue one screened box. Cold hallway air is not dry porch air. We already covered the clammy trick: why 68 still felt clammy.
  • Do not park a garage-class machine on the rattan. Size the room. Pint chart. AC vs dehumidifier.
  • Do not treat a short-cycling AC as the porch fix. Runtime still matters: right-size the AC, then wring humidity.
  • Do not drag wet cushions into the living room and declare the Florida room done.

Run this

  1. Log Florida-room relative humidity (RH) against an interior hallway wall for 24 hours at a normal living-room setpoint (74–76°F is a common Florida comfort band). Leave the slider the way you actually live with it after the band.
  2. If the room holds above 60% twenty minutes after the rain stops, keep the slider shut after showers, pull wet cushions off the seating, and size a small continuous-drain unit for that wing if the house coil is already losing. Living rooms still use the pint chart. After a rain pulse: after-storm sizing.
  3. Drain continuously. Hose downhill if you have the fall. A pump if the drain is uphill. A bucket behind a wicker chair is how you find a ring on the tile in October.

If landfall week is still on the calendar, stage before the cone: hurricane season moisture. If the assembly is already wet: post-storm dry-out. Board first when a cone is actually on you.

September still means moisture week in the screened room the sofa never sees. Measure the Florida room. Size that zone. Drain continuously.
