July in Florida. The house is 68°F and nobody wants to sit on the sofa. That is the clammy trick: cold air that is still wet.
People turn the thermostat down because “cold” and “dry” feel like the same complaint. They are not. An air conditioner removes moisture only while the coil is condensing. Once the room hits setpoint, the system shorts cycles. Temperature drops. Grains of water stay. You get 68°F at 60% relative humidity (RH), which feels like a refrigerated swamp.
What to measure before you touch the thermostat
Put a hygrometer on an interior wall, away from the supply vent and away from the slider.
- If relative humidity (RH) is 45–55% and you are still cold, the setpoint is the problem. Raise it.
- If relative humidity (RH) is holding above 60% at any comfortable temperature, you need dehumidification, not another two degrees of cooling.
Guide: AC vs dehumidifier in Florida. Targets: Florida humidity home guide.
A thermostat is not a hygrometer. “Feels sticky” is not a log.
Why the coil loses the argument in July
Florida return air is already wet. Overnight outdoor relative humidity (RH) sits in the 80s. Infiltration at the garage, attic hatch, and sliders keeps feeding the return. The AC can keep you from dying of heat and still lose the moisture race. That is when a dedicated dehumidifier earns its keep — sized for the zone, drained continuously, not a cube in the hallway.
Size: pint chart. After a rain pulse: after-storm sizing.
What not to do
- Do not drop to 68°F and call it a humidity strategy.
- Do not run the fan ON all day. You re-evaporate water off a wet coil into the house.
- Do not judge dryness from the supply vent. Measure the room.
- Do not ignore the garage. It will re-wet the shared wall. Garage guide.
Run this
- Log indoor relative humidity (RH) morning and night for a week at a normal setpoint (74–76°F is a common Florida comfort band).
- If living space holds above 60%, add a continuous-drain dehumidifier sized to that zone.
- Keep the AC in AUTO. Let the dehumidifier take the grains.
