The hallway said 75°F. The sofa felt fine. You shut the spare-room door after the last call, left the laptop on the table, and called the night done.
That is a Florida September pattern. Peak hurricane season still means overnight rain and outdoor air in the 80s. The living-room coil wrings return air. A closed spare desk room with no return of its own does not. Relative humidity (RH) on the interior desk wall can sit ten points above the hallway while you congratulate the setpoint.
Treat the spare desk room as a room.
Why a work nook holds last night
A Florida spare room is a small box. A laptop dumps a little heat. A closed door holds the air. Crack the window “for a minute” after the overnight band and you import outdoor load on top of the desk. Outdoor relative humidity (RH) after a night shower often stays in the 80s.
Living-space target on this site is about 45–55% relative humidity (RH). Sustained above 60% is the action cue. The desk room will often be the first zone to cross it after a closed night, even when the sofa zone is honest.
Guide: Florida humidity home guide. Closet version of a closed wet box: closet guide. How to walk the house: measure sq ft and AC size. Condo glass if this nook shares a slider wall: condo dehumidifier. Yesterday’s entry was wet soles: the foyer held the wet shoes. This note is the work room that sits off that hall. Quiet radar does not dry a closed nook. Leftover vapor after the radar clears: relative humidity (RH) after overnight rain.
A closed guest room is a cousin, not this room. That note already exists: the closed guest room stayed wet. Here the load is overnight air plus a shut door on a desk, not a made bed you forgot to air.
Morning check (ten minutes)
You do not need a lab. You need two numbers and a look at the door.
- Interior wall in the hallway. Not on the supply.
- Interior wall behind the desk — not on the window glass, not on the laptop exhaust.
Read relative humidity (RH) in both twenty minutes after you open the door, then again with the door the way you actually live with it during a work block. If the desk room sits 8–10 points above the hallway and over 60%, the house is not “fine.” Log both for 24 hours.
Feel the chair cushion and the paper stack. If the paper feels cool and limp after a closed night, you stored vapor in a box with no return. Open the door to the hallway during the work day if that hall is actually dry. Then shut the window after rain.
If the drywall at the base looks stained, pin it at 12 and 24 inches and compare to a known-dry closet. Looking dry is not a reading. Moisture meter after a leak.
Tempo Disc Maxi is the USA-made logger we list for a hallway vs desk-room pair you can read later. FloridaDamp is an Amazon associate — we earn from qualifying purchases. I still point at this one because it keeps a trail after you shut the door, not because anyone paid for a review.
Hand standing water to plumbing
If you see water at a heater, a closet, or a supply in the work room, that is not a relative humidity (RH) problem first. That is water on a floor. Carlo already walked placement: five places a leak puck earns rent. Fix or call out the leak. Then measure the air. A wet baseboard does not make a desk-room dehumidifier the first tool.
If the spare room itself is dripping from a supply, that is a wet assembly. Board and call a licensed plumber if the valve will not shut. Then pin.
What not to do in the spare desk room
- Do not crack the window “for fresh air” after overnight rain while the door stays shut. Outdoor relative humidity (RH) after a Florida shower often stays in the 80s. You import the load you are trying to dump.
- Do not point a box fan at the desk and call it a dry-out. A fan moves wet air. It does not wring it.
- Do not drop the whole-house thermostat to 68°F to rescue one closed nook. Cold hallway air is not dry desk air. We already covered the clammy trick: why 68 still felt clammy.
- Do not park a garage-class machine under the table. Size the room. Pint chart. AC vs dehumidifier.
- Do not treat a short-cycling AC as the overnight fix. Runtime still matters: right-size the AC, then wring humidity.
- Do not walk last night’s wet shoes from the foyer into the desk chair and declare the nook done.
Run this
- Log spare-desk-room relative humidity (RH) against an interior hallway wall for 24 hours at a normal living-room setpoint (74–76°F is a common Florida comfort band). Leave the door the way you actually live with it after the last call.
- If the room holds above 60% twenty minutes after you open it, keep the window shut after rain, leave the door open to a dry hall during the work block, and size a small continuous-drain unit for that wing if the house coil is already losing. Living rooms still use the pint chart. After a rain pulse: after-storm sizing.
- Drain continuously. Hose downhill if you have the fall. A pump if the drain is uphill. A bucket behind a desk chair is how you find a ring on the baseboard in October.
If landfall week is still on the calendar, stage before the cone: hurricane season moisture. If the assembly is already wet: post-storm dry-out. Board first when a cone is actually on you.
September still means moisture week in the work room the sofa never sees. Measure the spare desk room. Size that zone. Drain continuously.
