The Kitchen Held the Morning Steam

The hallway said 75°F. The sofa felt fine. You boiled water, ran the dishwasher, and cracked the slider “for a minute.”

That is a Florida September pattern. Peak hurricane season still means overnight rain and outdoor air in the 80s. The living-room coil wrings return air. A kitchen with a kettle, a dishwasher, and an open slider does not. Relative humidity (RH) at the interior pantry wall can sit ten points above the hallway while you congratulate the setpoint.

Treat the kitchen as a room.

Why breakfast loads the air

A Florida cook dumps vapor into a small box with a lot of glass. A kettle is a steam source. A dishwasher opens a wet cabinet. A range without a working hood parks that load under the soffit. Outdoor relative humidity (RH) after a night band often stays in the 80s. Crack the slider after rain and you import that load on top of the eggs.

Living-space target on this site is about 45–55% relative humidity (RH). Sustained above 60% is the action cue. The kitchen will often be the first zone to cross it after the first pot, even when the sofa zone is honest.

Guide: Florida humidity home guide. Closet version of a closed wet box: closet guide. How to walk the house: measure sq ft and AC size. Condo glass if this kitchen shares a slider wall: condo dehumidifier. Yesterday’s laundry note was the wet load: the laundry room held the wet load. This note is the cook room that feeds the hallway. Quiet radar does not dry a kitchen you just cooked in. Leftover vapor after the radar clears: relative humidity (RH) after overnight rain.

Morning check (ten minutes)

You do not need a lab. You need two numbers and a look at the glass.

  1. Interior wall in the hallway. Not on the supply.
  2. Interior pantry wall or the side of a cabinet run — not on the slider glass.

Read relative humidity (RH) in both twenty minutes after breakfast, then again with the slider the way you actually live with it. If the kitchen sits 8–10 points above the hallway and over 60%, the house is not “fine.” Log both for 24 hours.

Feel the cabinet kick. If the toe-kick feels cool and dense after a dishwasher cycle, you stored water in the base. Run the hood during the cook. Then shut the slider after rain.

If the drywall at the base looks stained, pin it at 12 and 24 inches and compare to a known-dry closet. Looking dry is not a reading. Moisture meter after a leak.

Tempo Disc Maxi is the USA-made logger we list for a hallway vs kitchen pair you can read later. FloridaDamp is an Amazon associate — we earn from qualifying purchases. I still point at this one because it keeps a trail after you shut the slider, not because anyone paid for a review.

Hand standing water to plumbing

If you see water at a fridge line, a heater, or a closet pan, that is not a relative humidity (RH) problem first. That is water on a floor. Carlo walked the kickplate: the fridge line wept into the kickplate. He already walked placement: five places a leak puck earns rent. Fix or call out the leak. Then measure the air. A wet kickplate does not make a kitchen dehumidifier the first tool.

If the kitchen itself is dripping from a supply, that is a wet assembly. Board and call a licensed plumber if the valve will not shut. Then pin.

What not to do in the kitchen

  • Do not crack the slider “for fresh air” after overnight rain while the kettle is on. Outdoor relative humidity (RH) after a Florida shower often stays in the 80s. You import the load you are trying to dump.
  • Do not skip the hood and call the ceiling fan a dry-out. A fan moves wet air. It does not wring it.
  • Do not drop the whole-house thermostat to 68°F to rescue one cook. Cold hallway air is not dry kitchen air. We already covered the clammy trick: why 68 still felt clammy.
  • Do not park a garage-class machine on the island rug. Size the room. Pint chart. AC vs dehumidifier.
  • Do not treat a short-cycling AC as the breakfast fix. Runtime still matters: right-size the AC, then wring humidity.
  • Do not walk a wet dish towel stack into the linen closet and declare the kitchen done. That handoff already has a note: the linen closet held the wet towels.

Run this

  1. Log kitchen relative humidity (RH) against an interior hallway wall for 24 hours at a normal living-room setpoint (74–76°F is a common Florida comfort band). Leave the slider the way you actually live with it after breakfast.
  2. If the room holds above 60% twenty minutes after a cook, run the hood first, keep the slider shut after rain, and size a small continuous-drain unit for that wing if the house coil is already losing. Living rooms still use the pint chart. After a rain pulse: after-storm sizing.
  3. Drain continuously. Hose downhill if you have the fall. A pump if the drain is uphill. A bucket behind a pantry door is how you find a ring on the toe-kick in October.

If landfall week is still on the calendar, stage before the cone: hurricane season moisture. If the assembly is already wet: post-storm dry-out. Board first when a cone is actually on you.

September still means moisture week in the cook room the sofa never sees. Measure the kitchen. Size that zone. Drain continuously.
