The Laundry Room Held the Wet Load

The hallway said 75°F. The sofa felt fine. You shut the laundry door on a wet basket and called the morning done.

That is a Florida September pattern. Peak hurricane season still means overnight rain and outdoor air in the 80s. The living-room coil wrings return air. A closed laundry room with a wet load does not. Relative humidity (RH) on the folding shelf can sit ten points above the hallway while you congratulate the setpoint.

Treat the laundry room as a room.

Why a wet load keeps the room loaded

A Florida wash dumps vapor into a small box. Cotton holds water. A closed door holds the air. Hang a wet load on the rod “to finish” and you parked a stall in a room with no return. Outdoor relative humidity (RH) after a night band often stays in the 80s. Crack the laundry window after rain and you import that load.

Living-space target on this site is about 45–55% relative humidity (RH). Sustained above 60% is the action cue. The laundry room will often be the first zone to cross it after the first load, even when the sofa zone is honest.

Guide: Florida humidity home guide. Closet version of a closed wet box: closet guide. How to walk the house: measure sq ft and AC size. Garage if this room shares a hot wall: Florida garage dehumidifier. Yesterday’s linen note was the towel stack: the linen closet held the wet towels. This note is the wash room that feeds that stack. A damp basket is not a puddle, and it is not the hallway. Quiet radar does not dry a closed wet load. Leftover vapor after the radar clears: relative humidity (RH) after overnight rain.

Morning check (ten minutes)

You do not need a lab. You need two numbers and a look at the basket.

  1. Interior wall in the hallway. Not on the supply.
  2. Folding shelf or interior laundry wall — not on the glass.

Read relative humidity (RH) in both after the first load, then again twenty minutes later with the door the way you actually live with it. If the laundry room sits 8–10 points above the hallway and over 60%, the house is not “fine.” Log both for 24 hours.

Feel the stack. If the core of a folded towel is cool and dense twenty minutes after the spin, you stored water. Hang it with the room fan on first. Then put dry cotton on the shelf.

If the drywall at the base looks stained, pin it at 12 and 24 inches and compare to a known-dry closet. Looking dry is not a reading. Moisture meter after a leak.

Tempo Disc Maxi is the USA-made logger we list for a hallway vs laundry-room pair you can read later. FloridaDamp is an Amazon associate — we earn from qualifying purchases. I still point at this one because it keeps a trail after you shut the door, not because anyone paid for a review.

Hand standing water to plumbing

If you see water at a closet pan, a heater, or a washer, that is not a relative humidity (RH) problem first. That is water on a floor. Carlo walked placement: five places a leak puck earns rent. He already walked the supply that sits on a slab: the washer hose softened on the slab. Fix or call out the leak. Then measure the air. A wet floor does not make a laundry-room dehumidifier the first tool.

If the laundry room itself is dripping from a supply, that is a wet assembly. Board and call a licensed plumber if the valve will not shut. Then pin.

What not to do in the laundry room

  • Do not park a wet load in a closed laundry room “to finish drying.” You moved the stall into a box with no fan.
  • Do not crack the laundry window “for fresh air” after overnight rain. Outdoor relative humidity (RH) after a Florida shower often stays in the 80s. You import the load you are trying to dump.
  • Do not drop the whole-house thermostat to 68°F to rescue one closed wash room. Cold hallway air is not dry laundry air. We already covered the clammy trick: why 68 still felt clammy.
  • Do not park a garage-class machine on the laundry mat. Size the room. Pint chart. AC vs dehumidifier.
  • Do not treat a short-cycling AC as the laundry fix. Runtime still matters: right-size the AC, then wring humidity.
  • Do not walk the wet pile into the linen closet and declare the wash room done.

Run this

  1. Log laundry-room relative humidity (RH) against an interior hallway wall for 24 hours at a normal living-room setpoint (74–76°F is a common Florida comfort band). Leave the laundry door the way you actually live with it after the load.
  2. If the room holds above 60% twenty minutes after you store a wet basket, hang the stack with the room fan on first, keep the window shut after rain, and size a small continuous-drain unit for that wing if the house coil is already losing. Living rooms still use the pint chart. After a rain pulse: after-storm sizing.
  3. Drain continuously. Hose downhill if you have the fall. A pump if the drain is uphill. A bucket behind a laundry door is how you find a ring on the shelf in October.

If landfall week is still on the calendar, stage before the cone: hurricane season moisture. If the assembly is already wet: post-storm dry-out. Board first when a cone is actually on you.

September still means moisture week in the wash room the sofa never sees. Measure the laundry room. Size that zone. Drain continuously.
