This is the climatological peak of the Atlantic season — the second week of September — and the basin has not made a hurricane.
That is the 2026 story as of this morning, September 9. It is not a reason to skip the moisture gear.
What the 2026 season has actually done
The Atlantic season runs June 1 through November 30. NOAA’s August update kept a below-normal call: a 75 percent chance of a quiet year, 7–13 named storms, 2–6 hurricanes, 0–2 major hurricanes. A typical 1991–2020 season is about 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, 3 majors.
El Niño is the main brake. It increases wind shear over the tropical Atlantic, which tears storms apart before they organize.
As of 09 UTC today, the National Hurricane Center’s seasonal tally is:
| Storm | Dates (2026) | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Arthur | June 17–18 | Tropical storm |
| Bertha | July 19–23 | Tropical storm |
| Cristobal | August 12–13 | Tropical storm |
| Dolly | August 27–28 | Tropical storm |
| Edouard | August 31–September 2 | Tropical storm |
Five named storms. Zero hurricanes. Zero majors. ACE is a sliver of a normal year. Edouard came ashore near the Texas–Louisiana line. None of those five was a Florida landfalling hurricane.
If no hurricane forms by Friday, September 11, 2026 would pass the satellite-era mark for the latest first hurricane (tied at September 11 in 2002 and 2013). AccuWeather and Florida desks have been counting that clock all week.
NHC’s morning outlook: four tropical waves in the basin, and no tropical cyclone expected in the next seven days. There is not a cone on Daytona today.
Quiet is not dry
A below-normal count is not a below-normal moisture year for a Florida house.
Tropical storms still dump rain. Overnight bands still drive water into stucco and the first two feet of drywall. Outdoor relative humidity (RH) sits in the 80s after the shower ends. Indoor relative humidity (RH) follows unless the envelope is closed and a machine is pulling vapor. That is the same physics as a named hurricane. The wind field is weaker. The wet wall is not.
Peak week is when FloridaDamp treats the house as if the season is on — because it is. Season end is November 30, not “the first hurricane didn’t show.”
If last night rained, read relative humidity (RH) after overnight rain and log a wet room against a dry bedroom. Sustained living-space relative humidity (RH) above 60% is the action cue. Garages are their own zone.
What to stage before Fay — or Gonzalo, or nobody
Do not wait for a cone over Volusia to buy the first hygrometer.
1. Measure. A logger in the wet room and a cheap display in a dry bedroom. Guide: best hygrometer for a humid Florida home. After wind-driven rain, pin drywall: moisture meter after a leak.
2. Size for leftover wet assemblies, not a bedroom pint rating. After a storm pulse, capacity has to cover wet drywall and a humid garage. After-storm dehumidifier sizing and the pint chart.
3. Drain continuously. Buckets during a multi-day band is how people give up at 2 a.m. Hose downhill, or a pump if the drain is uphill. Condo version: condo dehumidifier.
The hurricane season moisture is the pre-landfall stack: meter, logger, USA-built dehumidifier, air mover. The post-storm dry-out is what you run if the wall is already wet.
Dri-Eaz Revolution LGR is the USA-built restoration dehumidifier in that stack. It is not a 35-pint cube. Do not put a Cube in a flooded two-car garage and call the season quiet.
What not to do with a quiet year
- Do not read “below-normal” as “skip the gear.” One landfalling tropical storm is enough to wet a wall.
- Do not treat AC at 68°F as dehumidification. See AC vs dehumidifier in Florida.
- Do not run air movers without a dehumidifier. You move wet air into the next room.
- Do not wait for drywall to look dry. Paper face hides a wet core.
- Do not ignore the garage. Hot, no AC, high-temp continuous-drain class only: Florida garage dehumidifier.
Through November 30
NOAA’s ranges still allow hurricanes later. El Niño lowers the odds. It does not zero them. The next names on the list are Fay, Gonzalo, Hanna, Isaias. You do not need a name on a cone to have 60% indoor relative humidity (RH) after a three-day band.
Board first when a cone is actually on you. The rest of the week: log indoor relative humidity (RH), keep the gear where you can reach it, and treat leftover rain as a moisture problem, not a weather-channel problem.
Reed Lang writes these notes from coastal Florida. Storm counts come from NHC and NOAA. Indoor relative humidity (RH) targets are educational, not a mold guarantee. If a wall is open, stained, or growing, call local restoration.
